Hornets Fall to Spartans, 24 February 2007

The Hornets Men's Basketball Team needed a win desperately Saturday, but fell short to Missouri Baptist losing 86-79.  The loss dropped the Hornets record to 6-23 overall and 2-10 in the American Midwest Conference.

 

The Hornets could never gain a lead in the first half, but tied the game on four occasions with the latest coming from a field goal by Phillip Stewart with 7:40 remaining in the half, tying the score at 25-25.  Despite shooting a miserable 31 percent in the first half, the Hornets only trailed 33-28 at halftime.

 

During the second half, the Hornets could not get over the hump, as they tied the game 42-42 with 16:17 remaining, but could not take the lead.  The Spartans lead grew to as much as 65-51 with 6:19 remaining in the game, but the Hornets went on one last run to reduce it to 73-68 with 2:19 remaining.  The Hornets would not get any closer as they were defeated with a final score of 86-79.

 

Senior Rodrick Coleman led the Hornets with 26 points, while fellow senior Melvin Martin added 22 points in the loss.  The Hornets will play McKendree College on the road, Wednesday at 7 p.m., in the first round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament.

 

Hornets Defeat Missouri Valley in Season Opener, 02 November 2007

            The Hornets opened their 2007-08 season with a big road win against Missouri Valley 77-73.  With the win the Hornets start their season 1-0, while the Vikings drop to 0-1 on the season.

            The Hornets would trail early in the game, but would quickly tie the game 7-7 on a Dustin Fox 3-pointer.  The Hornets would gain the lead and hold it for the majority of the first half with Fox connecting on another 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Hornets a 39-34 halftime lead.

            The Vikings would score the first six points to take back the lead 40-39 in the second half.  Markus Burns would make a lay-up to stop the Vikings run and put the Hornets back up 41-40.  The Hornets would never trail again as their lead would never grow more than five points, holding on to defeat the Vikings 77-73.

            The Hornets had four players in double figures led by Dustin Fox 32 points, followed by Phillip Stewart 16 points, Mack Caldwell 15 points and Robert Bankhead 10 points.

            The Hornets will travel to play Eastern Illinois in an exhibition game Saturday at 7 p.m.  Regular season play will resume Thursday, November 15 at SIU-Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m.    

 

 

Hornets Lose Final Exhibition against EIU, 10 November 2007

            Eastern Illinois powered their way to an 85-63 victory over Harris-Stowe, Saturday night at Lantz Arena.  The win gave the Eastern Illinois Panthers (1-0) their first victory of the season, the Hornets stay at (1-0) concluding their exhibition schedule.

            The Hornets would hold a slim two point advantage with 13:05 remaining in the first half on a lay-up by Mack Caldwell to put the Hornets up 8-6.  The Panthers would quickly respond with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 15-8 advantage.  The Hornets would hang close on a jumper by Phillip Stewart with 6:46 remaining in the first half to bring the score to 25-22.  The Hornets trailed the Panther 40-30 at the half.

            The Panthers would continue to dominate the boards collecting a total of 21 offensive rebounds to keep a double-digit lead the majority of the second half.  From the foul line the Panthers would go 21-24 to secure the 85-63 victory.

            Dustin Fox led the Hornets with 15 points.  Robert Bankhead score 13 points while Phillip Stewart added 10 points.

            The Hornets will continue regular season play Thursday, at SIU-Edwardsville, 7:30 p.m.   

           

 

Cougars Hands Harris-Stowe First Loss, 15 November 2007

            Harris-Stowe never lead Thursday night, as NCAA division II SIU-Edwardsville dominated the Hornets in a 90-61 victory.  The victory moved the Cougars to 1-0, while the defeat gave the Hornets their first loss and dropped them to 1-1.

            The Cougars hammered the Hornets early, scoring the first nine points of the game.  The Hornets would connect on their first point with 17:30 left in the first half on a Mack Caldwell free throw.  The Hornets would climb back in the game on a jumper by Markus Burns to bring the score 15-12 with 13:48 remaining the first half, but that would be as close as the Hornets would get as the Cougars would build their lead to 48-33 at the end of the half.

            The Cougars would only extend their lead in the second half, holding an advantage that grew as high as 39 points.  The Hornets would hit a late flurry of three-pointers but the Cougars proved to be too much winning 90-61.

            Phillip Stewart led the Hornets in points and rebounds with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

            Harris-Stowe will travel to NCAA Division II, No. 10 ranked Southern Indiana Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

           


 

Hornets Split in UMSL Tournament, 25 November 2007

           Harris-Stowe was defeated by NCAA division II University of Missouri St. Louis 74-60, but defeated another NCAA division II University of Missouri-Rolla 83-68 to leave the UMSL Thanksgiving Tournament at 1-1.  The split moved the Hornets overall record to 2-3.

            On Saturday the Hornets took on the host team UMSL and had a 9-7 lead with 15:47 left in the first half on a Dustin Fox three-pointer.   However, the Tritons would come storming back to take a double-digit lead the majority of the half.  Markus Burns would hit two late free throws to bring the deficit to 34-26 at half.

            The closest the Hornets would get in the second half was five points when John Hotaling knocked down a three-pointer with 16:00 left in the game, but failed to get a lead and would fall to the Tritons 74-60.

            Dustin Fox led the Hornets with 13 points, while John Hotaling would connect on four three-points off the bench for 12 points.

            Harris-Stowe would bounce back Sunday against Missouri-Rolla controlling the majority of the game.  The Hornets would take its first lead on a three-pointer by Terrance Lee with 15:10 in the first half to take an 8-7 advantage.  The Miners would regain the lead 22-20 with 7:40 left in the first half, but the Hornets would take it right back and go into half-time leading 36-32.

            Shooting close to 60% in the second half the Hornets would never relinquish their lead and would go on to defeat the Miners 83-68.

            Dustin Fox would lead the Hornets with 22 points knocking down six three-pointers.  Terrance Lee stepped up big filling in for injured Phillip Stewart scoring 15 points.

            The Hornets will play their third game in three days entertaining Missouri Valley, Monday at 7 p.m. for their home opener.

 

Hornets Roll Past Vikings in Opener, 26 November 2007

           Harris-Stowe opened their first home game in style defeating Missouri Valley 72-57.  The Hornets win moved them back to the .500 mark at 3-3, while the loss kept the Vikings winless at 0-6.

            The Hornets never trailed in the contest sparked by great three-point shooting from Dustin Fox who connected on five from 3-point range in the first half.  The Hornets lead would grow to 15 points, however the Vikings would gain momentum into half time by bringing the score to 36-30.

            The Hornets would start the second half on a run to regain their double-digit lead back.  Harris-Stowe stifling defense holding the Vikings to 35% from the field, would secure the lead and the victory.

            Dustin Fox led the Hornets with 19 points, while Mack Caldwell added 16 points and Robert Bankhead 14 points.

            Harris-Stowe will stay at home and try for their third consecutive win playing Indiana University Southeast, Friday at 6 p.m.

 

Hornets Use Second-Half Comeback to Win, 01 December 2007

 

            Harris-Stowe erased a 10 point halftime deficit to comeback and gained their third consecutive victory defeating Indiana University Southeast 77-74.  The win moves the Hornets up to 4-3, while the loss dropped the Grenadiers to 3-3.

            The Grenadiers led the Hornets 42-32 at halftime.  Shooting was a struggle for the Hornets as they shot only 33 percent in the first half, including 2 of 10 from 3-point territory.

            The Hornets came out blazing in the second half going on a 17-2 run in a five minute span to take a 49-44 lead.  The game would remain close as the Grenadiers would not allow the Hornets to pull away.  The Grenadiers would have a chance to tie the game, but failed to connect on a 3-pointer seconds before the buzzer giving the Hornets the close victory.

            Dustin Fox led the Hornets with 24 points, while Uros Vukovich had his first double-double as a Hornet scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

            The Hornets will travel to play NCAA division II Southwest Baptist, Monday at 8 p.m.

 

Hornets Comeback Fall Short Against Comets, 08 December 2007

           Harris-Stowe would lose the offensive battle to Crichton College 94-85, Saturday afternoon.  The loss dipped the Hornets under .500 at 4-5, while the Comets moved to a game over .500 at 5-4.

            The Hornets would trail the whole game and dug themselves into an 11-4 deficit to start the game.  The Comets continued to dominate building a first half lead as high as 18 points, but went into the half up 48-35.

            In major foul trouble the Hornets would start the second half by trading baskets with the Comets.  The Hornets would make a run and bring the lead down to eight points, but could not get enough defensive stops to pull off the victory.

            Harris-Stowe and Crichton College would both shoot over 50 percent for the game.  Dustin Fox led the Hornets with 25 points, while Phillip Stewart scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

            The Hornets will travel to play Culver-Stockton on Thursday at 7 p.m. before returning home Saturday, December 15 to play NCAA division II Henderson State.  Harris-Stowe will then meet Crichton again Tuesday, December 18 at home

 

Hornets Start New Year with Win, 02 January 2008

           Harris-Stowe put an end to a seven-game losing streak by starting 2008 with a 68-41 victory over Greenville College.  The win moves the Hornets to 5-10 going into conference play, while Greenville dropped to 3-5.

            The Hornets would jump out to a 10-2 advantage early forcing the Panthers to call an early timeout.  However, both teams would struggle to score points in the first half as the Hornets could only score four points in the remaining 9:45 in the first half to hold a 28-20 lead.

            The Hornets would dominate the second half with the Panthers never getting closer than the eight point deficit at the half.  The Panthers would continue to struggle to score shooting 28.8% for the game.  The Hornets would shoot tremendously better in the second half going 15-of-28 (53.6 percent).

            Nine different Hornets would score, led by Mack Caldwell season high 16 points in 14 minutes.  Phillip Stewart added a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

            The Hornets will start conference play January 10 at Columbia College at 7 p.m.

 

Hornets Sqaunder Early Lead in Conference Opener, 10 January 2008

             Harris-Stowe wasted a 15-point halftime lead losing to Columbia College in their conference opener 84-81 in overtime.  The Loss dropped the Hornets to 5-11 overall and 0-1 in the American Midwest Conference, while the Cougars move to 13-3 and 1-0 in the (AMC).

             The Hornets dominated the first half scoring the games first eight points and holding the Cougars scoreless for the first six minutes plus of play.  Hot shooting and good defense would allow the Hornets to lead by as much as 19-points and go into half time with a 39-24 advantage.

            The second half would be a struggle for the Hornets as the Cougars clawed their way back into the game overcoming the deficit, taking their first lead of the game with just over four minutes remaining.  However, the Hornets would hold a two point lead with 22 seconds remaining when Cougar guard Lee Sattler was fouled on a three-point attempt.  Sattler would connect on the first two free throws to tie the game, but miss the third.  The Hornets failed to score of the final possession of regulation missing a late three-point attempt to send the game into overtime.

            The Cougars got a quick start off the overtime tip-off converting with a monstrous dunk to give them the early lead and the momentum to hold on to the victory.

            Brandon Davis led the Hornets with 24 points, while two double-doubles were acquired by Phillip Stewart’s 16 points 13 rebounds and Mack Caldwell’s 15 points and 14 rebound performances.

            Harris-Stowe will travel to play University of Illinois-Springfield Saturday at 4 p.m.

 

Hornets Fall Short Against Prairie Stars, 12 January 2008

 

            Harris-Stowe lost their second consecutive American Midwest Conference (AMC) game to No. 27 ranked University of Illinois-Springfield 78-71.  The loss dropped the Hornets to 5-12 overall and 0-2 in the AMC.  The Prairie Stars improve to 12-6 and a perfect 2-0 in conference play.

            The Hornets would jump out to an early 7-2 lead on two Robert Bankhead free throws with 17 minutes left in the half.  However, the Prairie Stars would go on a 8-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage.  With just over 12 minutes remaining in the half, Brandon Davis would knock down a 3-pointer to give the Hornets a 16-15 lead.  The Hornets would go into halftime trailing 32-30.

            Robert Bankhead would put the Hornets up 41-40 on a 3-point field goal, but the Hornets would remain on 41 as UIS would score the next 10 points.  The Prairie Stars lead would grow by as much as 13 points, but the Hornets could not get closer than six points, the rest of the way.

            The Hornets had four players in double-digit scoring led by Brandon Davis 16 points.  Dustin Fox scored 15 points, Robert Bankhead scored 11 points, and Phillip Stewart had 10 points.

            The Hornets will host their conference home opener, Thursday against Hannibal-LaGrange at 7 p.m.

 

Hornets Hang On for First AMC Win, 17 January 2008

            Senior forward Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) poured in 21 points to lead Harris-Stowe State University men’s basketball team to an 57-55 victory against Hannibal-LaGrange at the Emerson Performance Center.  The Hornets improve to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in the American Midwest Conference.  Hannibal-LaGrange dropped to 9-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

            The Hornets would not take their first lead until just under 16 minutes in the first half on an “old fashion” three-point play by Dustin Fox to make it 14-13.  The lead would never be relinquished by the Hornets for the remainder of the first half leading 34-29 at the break.

            The Trojans would battle back in the game and take a two point lead with 6:33 remaining in the contest.  Senior guard Kenny Lee would later knock down a huge three-pointer with the shot clock running down to give the Hornets a 50-49 lead with 4:44 remaining.  The Trojans would have one more last shot to tie or win the game with eight seconds remaining and down 57-55, but failed to score on two desperate attempts.

            Phillip Stewart led the Hornets with 21 points, while Dustin Fox scored 13 points and Brandon Davis added 10 points.

            Harris-Stowe will try to get to the .500 mark in the conference at home against William Woods, Saturday at 4 p.m.

 

Hornets Reach .500 Mark in the AMC, 19 January 2008

             Harris-Stowe led from start to finish defeating William Woods 82-70 at the Emerson Performance Center.  The win moved the Hornets to 7-12 overall and 2-2 in the American Midwest Conference.  The Owls dropped to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

            The Hornets would jump out of the gate taking an early 10-2 lead on a Theo Boykin jumper with just over 16 minutes remaining in the first half.  Terrance Lee would connect on a long three-point field goal at the buzzer to give the Hornets a 42-34 lead going into halftime.

            The second half would see the Hornets continue to dominate, pressuring the Owls on defense and building their lead to as high as 18 points.

            Senior guard Mack Caldwell led the Hornets with a double-double scoring a season high 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  Phillip Stewart added 17 points and Kenny Lee chipped in with 10 points and 6 assists.

            The Hornets will remain at home at take on first place McKendree, Thursday at 7 p.m.

 

Bearcats Too Much in First-Half for Hornets, 24 January 2008

           The No. 15 ranked McKendree University Bearcats stayed unbeaten tonight defeating Harris-Stowe 78-61, at the Emerson Performance Center.  The Hornets fall to 7-13 overall, and 2-3 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC).  The Bearcats remained undefeated in the AMC at 5-0 and move to 15-5 overall.

            The Hornets would never gain a lead, but would make the score 7-6 on a Brandon Davis field goal with 15:25 remaining in the first-half.  The Bearcats would catch fire offensively, and build their lead to a game high 19 points with 6:34 remaining in the first half.  Bearcat guard T.J. Stone would lead the offensive barrage, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point territory, giving the Bearcats a 40-25 lead at halftime.

            The Hornets would try to climb back into the game in the second-half, but for every run the Hornets had the Bearcats would counter.  Senior guard Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) would bring the lead down to nine with 8-minutes remaining, on a old fashion three-point play.  However, the Bearcats would be too much for the Hornets, building their lead back up to double-digits and holding on for the victory.

            The Hornets were led by Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo/ Bethel College) 18 points.  The only other Hornet in double-digits was Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia College) with 10 points.

            Harris-Stowe will travel across town to play Missouri Baptist, Saturday at 4 p.m.

           

 

 

Tonight's Men's Basketball Game Cancelled, 31 January 2008

Due to the threat of inclement weather, tonight’s men’s basketball game vs. Williams Baptist has been cancelled.  The game will be made up Monday, February 4, at 7 p.m. at the Emerson Performance Center.

 

Hornets Comeback Fall Short against Cougars, 02 February 2008

            Harris-Stowe dropped their third consecutive American Midwest Conference (AMC) game losing to Columbia College 68-53 at the Emerson Performance Center, Saturday night.  The loss moved the Hornets to 7-15 overall and 2-5 in the AMC. The Cougars win moved them to 18-6 overall and 6-2 in the AMC.

            The Hornets found themselves in a huge deficit struggling offensively trailing 42-16 at halftime.  Poor shooting was a problem for the Hornets connecting on 6-of-27 field goals, for 22 percent.

            The Hornets would come out aggressive in the second half staging a remarkable comeback outscoring the Cougars 25-5, bringing the lead down to 47-41 with 11 minutes remaining.  Several missed opportunities would hinder the Hornets chances of getting the Cougars lead lower than six points.

            Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Bethel College) and Dustin Fox (Lexington, Ky./ Dunbar H.S.) both had 13 points to lead the Hornets.

            Harris-Stowe will host Williams Baptist, Monday, 7 p.m.   

 

Hornets Snap Losing Streak against Eagles, 04 February 2008

            Harris-Stowe never trailed in their victory against Williams Baptist 84-70, Monday night at the Emerson Performance Center.  The win moved the Hornets to 8-15 overall and 3-5 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC).  The Eagles dropped to 9-11 and 1-7 in conference play.

            Harris-Stowe would jump out to a 15-10 lead on a field goal by Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Bethel College) with 15:15 remaining.  The Eagles would fight back and tie the game 21-21 with 12:06 remaining.  The Hornets would go on a 10-0 run later in the half to extend their lead going into halftime leading 45-38.

            The second-half would see the Hornets maintain control building their largest lead 62-45 on a pair of Theo Boykin (St. Louis, Mo. Forest Park C.C.) free throws with 13:35 remaining.  The Eagles would provide one last scare knocking down a three-point field goal with 4:47 remaining to bring the Hornets lead down to 72-65.  The Hornets would prevail building their lead back to double-digits and securing the victory.

            Harris-Stowe had four players in double-figures led by Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo. Forest Park C.C.) 18 points.  Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Bethel College) and Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) both added 16 points, while Robert Bankhead (Chicago, Ill./ Missouri Baptist) chipped in with 15 points.

            Harris-Stowe will host Illinois-Springfield, Thursday at 7 p.m.

           

 

Hornets Blow Big Lead to Prairie Stars, 07 February 2008

            Harris-Stowe squandered an 18-point halftime lead to University of Illinois-Springfield losing in overtime 75-71 in the Emerson Performance Center, Thursday night.  The loss drops the Hornets to 7-16, and 3-6 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC).  The Prairie Stars move to 16-8 overall and 6-2 in the AMC.

            The Hornets would never trail in the first-half building their largest lead of the game on a Andre Aaron (St. Louis, Mo./ Kaskaskia C.C.) field goal to put them up 46-22 with 3:08 remaining.  However, the Prairie Stars would close the half with a run to cut the Hornets lead to 48-30 at the half.  The Hornets shot an astounding 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the field in the first-half led by Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) 21 points.

            The Hornets would struggle mightily in the second-half going the first four minutes with out a single point.  The Prairie Stars would not take their first lead until 1:08 remaining in the contest on a pair of free-throws to put them up 63-62.    Andre Aaron (St. Louis, Mo./ Kaskaskia C.C.) would then knock down two free-throws to put the Hornets back up 64-63 with 46 seconds remaining.  With 25 seconds remaining the Prairie Stars would score another two point field goal to put them up 65-64.  With one final possession the Hornets had several opportunities to win, but Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Bethel College) would be fouled with .6 seconds remaining.  Stewart would hit the first free-throw but missed the second free-throw sending the game into overtime.

            In overtime the Hornets would score the first two points on a pair of Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) free throws.  The Prairie Stars would respond next time down the court with a three-point play to give them a 68-67 lead.  Harris-Stowe would never regain the lead, losing 75-71.

            Harris-Stowe shot a staggering 16 percent (5-of-30) in the second-half.

            Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) led the Hornets with 26 points.  Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Bethel College) added a double-double with 13 points and a season high 19 rebounds.

            Harris-Stowe will travel on the road to take on Hannibal-LaGrange, Saturday at 4 p.m.

 

Hornets Win Back to Back Games, 11 February 2008

            Harris-Stowe men’s basketball team won back to back games defeating conference opponent Hannibal-LaGrange 61-58 Saturday night, and knocking off non-conference opponent St. Louis College of Pharmacy 79-62, Monday night.  The Hornets victories have pushed their overall record to 10-16, and their win against the Trojans moved their American Midwest Conference (AMC) record to 4-6 (4th place).

            The Hornets led the majority of the first-half against Hannibal-LaGrange, going into halftime with a 29-19 advantage.  The Trojans were held to 30 percent (8-of-26) from the field.

            The Trojans would fight back in the second-half to take the lead with three minutes remaining in the contest.  However, the Hornets would claw back down the stretch and get a huge defensive stop holding a one point lead with seconds remaining on a charge taken by Robert Bankhead (Chicago, Ill./ Missouri Baptist).  Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) would knock down two huge free throws to give the Hornets the 61-58 victory.

            Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Bethel College) would lead the Hornets with 16 points.

            The Hornets continued their momentum from their big win against the Trojans, into Monday night’s game against St. Louis College of Pharmacy.  The Hornets held a double-digit lead the majority of the game, cruising to the victory.

            Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) knocked down seven three-pointers adding to his game high 26 points.

            The Hornets will travel to William Woods to continue AMC play, Thursday

 

Hornets Lose Late to Owls, 14 February 2008

             The Harris-Stowe men’s basketball team wasted another substantial lead falling to William Woods 72-69 at the Helen Stephens Sports Complex, Thursday night.  The loss drops the Hornets to 10-17 overall and 4-7 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC).  The Owls move up to 7-17 overall and are now tied with the Hornets in the conference with also a 4-7 record.

            The Hornets got off to a great start never trailing in the first-half, taking a 11-point lead on an Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) field goal with 3:59 remaining.  Harris-Stowe would go into halftime with a 31-23 advantage.

            The Owls got off to a quick second-half start going on a 13-5 run to tie the contest at 36.  The Hornets would respond by building their lead back up to seven points on a three-point field by Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) with 7:58 remaining.  The Owls would make one more run and take the lead on a three-point field goal with just under six minutes remaining.

            The Hornets would fight back and have several chances to tie or win the game down the final stretch.  Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) would have a final attempt with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game, but was denied by William Woods, Da’kari Shelby’s block.  The Owls would hold on for the 72-69 victory.

            Brandon Davis (Chicago, Ill./ Kaskaskia C.C.) led the Hornets with 18 points.  Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

            Harris-Stowe will travel to take on first place McKendree, Saturday at 4 p.m.

 

Hornets Suffer Loss to No.14 Bearcats, 16 February 2008

            The Harris-Stowe State University men’s basketball team suffered a 79-54 loss to McKendree University at the Melvin Price Convocational Center, Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets dropped to 10-18 overall and 4-8 in the American Midwest Conference.  The Bearcats improve to 21-6 overall and remained in first place with an 11-1 conference record.

            The Hornets trailed the Bearcats 12-6 to start the game, when Bearcats freshman forward, Eric Hobbie took over the game with two highlight reel dunks to spark McKendree.  The Hornets would find themselves down 45-23 at halftime, shooting 28 percent.

            The Hornets would bring the Bearcats lead down to as little as 14-points, but could not get any closer as the Bearcats offense would pick back up.  The Hornets shot 29.7 percent (19-of-64) for the game, while the Bearcats shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63).

            Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) led the Hornets with 13 points, while the only other Hornet in double-figures was Theo Boykin (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) who added 10 points.

            Harris-Stowe will host Missouri Baptist on “Senior Night”, Thursday at 7 p.m.

Hornets Hold Off Eagles on the Road, 23 February 2008

             Harris-Stowe Men’s Basketball Team defeated Williams Baptist 88-76, Saturday afternoon.  The win moved the Hornets to 11-18 overall and to 4th place with a record of 5-8 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC).  The Eagles dropped to 9-16 overall and 1-12 in the AMC.

            The Eagles started off the game on an 8-0 run.  The Hornets would battle back and take their first lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half.  The Hornets would take a 44-36 lead into halftime.

            The Eagles would claw themselves back into the game in the second half tying the score on a couple occasions, but the Hornets would never relinquish the lead bringing home the double-digit victory.

            Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park C.C.) led five Hornets in double-figure scoring with 21 points.  Phillip Stewart added a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

            Harris-Stowe will host Missouri Baptist, Monday at 7 p.m. their final regular season game, in the Emerson Performance Center.  A Hornets win would guarantee a 4th place finish in the Conference and a first round home game in the conference tournament.

 

Harris-Stowe Achieves Historic Victory on Senior Night, 25 February 2008

            The Harris-Stowe State University Men’s Basketball Team will host their first American Midwest Conference (AMC) playoff game in school history after defeating Missouri Baptist 63-58, Monday night at the Emerson Performance Center. The Hornets’ victory clinched 4th place in the AMC, which allows them to host their first-round opponent Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 7 p.m.

            Missouri Baptist scored the first two points of the game, but Harris-Stowe took the lead when Robert Bankhead (Chicago, Ill./ Missouri Baptist) made a 3-pointer with 19:04 remaining in the first half. The Hornets’ first-half lead grew to an impressive 13 points after Dustin Fox (Lexington, Ky./ Dunbar H.S.) scored a 3-point field goal with 2:02 remaining in the half. Harris-Stowe led 32-22 at halftime.

            The Spartans came out blazing in the second half when they went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 34 with 16:28 remaining. The Hornets countered by taking the lead and making it 42-34 with 11:59 remaining. However, the Spartans would go on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 43 with 9:18 remaining. The Spartans never regained the lead for the rest of the game thereby securing the Hornets’ victory.   

           Fox led the Hornets with 19 points in only 21 minutes. Senior forward, Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, Mo./ Forest Park) grabbed a game high of seven rebounds.

            Come support our Men’s Basketball Team this Saturday at the Emerson Performance Center as they challenge Hannibal-LaGrange in the first round of the AMC tournament.

 

Harris-Stowe Gains Historic Win in AMC Playoffs, 01 March 2008

The Harris-Stowe Men’s Basketball Team won their first American Midwest Conference (AMC) playoff game in school history when they defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 72-55 at the Emerson Performance Center, Saturday night. The Hornets, riding a three-game win streak, never trailed in the game and trounced the Trojans for the third time this season.

 

The Hornets claimed their biggest lead of the first half on a John Hotaling (San Diego, CA/Palomar C.C.) 3-point field goal at the buzzer to make the score 31-18 at halftime.

 

The Hornets continued their domination by extending their lead to as high as 27 points on a Brandon Davis (Chicago, IL/Kaskaskia C.C.) 15-foot jumper, with 9:35 remaining.  

           

Davis led four Hornets in double-figures with 27 points, including seven 3-pointers.

 

Harris-Stowe will travel to No.1 seed McKendree University, Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the semifinal matchup of the AMC Tournament.

 

No. 10 Bearcats End the Hornets' Season, 05 March 2008

The Harris-Stowe Men’s Basketball Team’s season came to an end Wednesday night when they lost to McKendree University 81-72 in the semifinal round of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament.

 

The Hornets grabbed a 18-17 lead eight minutes into the contest before McKendree went on a 16-5 run making it 33-23 with 4:35 remaining in the first half. The Hornets trailed 41-29 going into halftime.

 

The Bearcats held a double-digit advantage the majority of the second half. McKendree shot 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field for the game. However, the Hornets made the same amount of field goals (29) but were outscored 16-8 from the free throw line.

 

Phillip Stewart (St. Louis, MO/Bethel College) led Harris-Stowe with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Mack Caldwell (St. Louis, MO/Forest Park C.C.) added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Brandon Davis (Chicago, IL/Kaskaskia C.C.) chipped in with 11 points.

 

The Hornets end their season with an overall record of 13-19 but finished fourth in the AMC, which is their highest finish ever. They also made history this season by winning their first AMC playoff game.

 

 

Stewart, Caldwell and Davis Achieve AMC Post-Season Honors, 09 March 2008

Three Harris-Stowe Men’s Basketball players received American Midwest Conference (AMC) Post-Season Honors for the 2007-08 season.

 

Senior co-captain and forward Phillip Stewart made AMC First-Team All-Conference. Receiving AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference were senior co-captain and guard Mack Caldwell and junior guard Brandon Davis.

 

Stewart is the first Hornet to receive AMC First-Team All-Conference selection since Mike Harmon in the 1998-1999 season. Stewart was second on the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game and led the team in rebounds with 7.7 per game.

 

Caldwell led the team in steals with 61, was second on the team in rebounds at 6.6 a game and was second in assists with 2.8 per game.

 

Davis was the leading scorer for the Hornets this season and averaged 15.5 points per game. Davis, the Hornets’ three-point specialist, led the Hornets in three-point field goals with 79.
