12/04/09-- Alves, Healey Earn Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award

Lucas Rodrigues Alves (Stella Maris/ Brazil) and Dan Healey (STLCC-Meramec/ St. Louis, MO) both earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Awards for their academic excellence in the classroom. They were two of 256 NAIA Division I Men’s Soccer players to earn this award.

 

The Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete award is given to student-athletes who are juniors or above in academic standing, been enrolled with a nominating institution for a minimum of one full year in attendance, and have maintained a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the time of the nomination.

 

 
11/12/09-- HSSU Men's Soccer Receives Five Honorable Mention All-Conference Selections

The Harris-Stowe State University Men’s Soccer Team had five players named American Midwest Conference (AMC) Honorable Mention All-Conference. Jensel Olascoaga (Gateway H.S./ Mission Viejo, CA),  Ameir Mahdi (STLCC-Meramec/ St. Louis, MO), Lucas Rodrigues Alves (Stella Maris/ Brazil), Dan Healey (STLCC-Meramec/ St. Louis, MO) and Colby Poindexter (McCluer North H.S./ Florissant, MO) all received the honor.

 

Olascoaga was second on the team in points with 16 and tied for second in goals scored with seven. He scored multiple goals in three games this season against Central Methodist University, Missouri Baptist University and Williams Baptist College.

 

Mahdi also scored seven goals and led the team with 28 shots on goal.

 

Alves led the Hornets in points (20), goals (8) and assists (4). He started in every game this season and averaged just over a point a game.

 

Healey served as a huge part of the Hornets’ defense that did not allow over two goals in 15 of their 19 games this season.

 

Poindexter played in all 19 games in goal for the Hornets. He recorded 96 saves on the season and added three shutouts.

 

The Hornets also had eight players earn Academic All-Conference honors by having a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Healey, Alves, Poindexter, Timothy Buxman (Ritenour H.S./ St. Louis, MO), Ernad Cavka (Mehlville H.S./ St. Louis, MO), Richard Gentry (Pacific H.S./ Pacific, MO), Jake Neff (Windsor H.S./ Imperial, MO) and Matt Wright (Union H.S./ Union, MO) all received the award.

 
Scott Hartwig - Head Coach,

In December 2003, Scott Hartwig was appointed Head Coach of the Men’s Soccer Team. Hartwig, a Harris-Stowe graduate, was a four-year starter for the Men’s Soccer Team from 1996-1999. He captained the team from 1997-1999 and played in two national tournaments. His team finished the 1998 and 1999 seasons nationally ranked and won the Region V Championship both years.

Hartwig led Harris-Stowe to three American Midwest Conference (AMC) Championships in 1996, 1997 and 1999. Hartwig was assistant coach of the 2000 Harris-Stowe State College Men’s Soccer Team, reaching the NAIA National Tournament semi-finals and finishing third in the national rankings.

He lives in St. Louis with his wife, daughter and son.

In August 2004, John Ryan was appointed Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach. Ryan was a four-year teammate of Head Coach Scott Hartwig. Ryan, a Harris-Stowe graduate, was a four-year starter on the Harris-Stowe Men’s Soccer Team from 1996-1999. Ryan led the Hornets offensively with 76 goals in his four-year career, guiding them to back-to-back national tournaments in 1998 and 1999. After Harris-Stowe, Ryan played professionally for the St. Louis Steamers from 2000-2003.
