Ross Receives AMC Player of the Year Honors, 09 March 2008

The American Midwest Conference (AMC) announced their post-season award winners for the2007-08 season with Hornets senior guard Chanel Ross named as AMC Player of the Year.

 

Ross led the Hornets to a 22-9 record the second best record in the AMC and, the Hornetshighest finish ever. Ross was named NAIA Player of the Week twice this season, and won four Player of the Week awards. Ross leads the NAIA in steals with 6.7 per game and assists with 8.3 per game. Ross led the Hornets in scoring with an average of 20.1 points and even eclipsed the “1000 point mark” in just two seasons at Harris-Stowe.

 

Sheri Jones received Honorable Mention All-Conference. Jones a junior forward from St. Louis, MO was the Hornetssecond leading scorer with 12.4 points per game, first on the team in rebounds with 8 per game and first on the team in field goals at 55.5 percent.

 

Students who maintained at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale throughout the season won Academic All-Conference honors. Harris-Stowe athletes Jones and Carmen Weaver both achieved this commendable honor.

 

 

 

Ross Selected as State Farm NAIA All-American, 18 March 2008

The Harris-Stowe State University Hornets continue to make history, as senior Chanel Ross was the first Hornet to be selected to the NAIA State Farm Coaches’ All-American team. Ross was one of ten female athletes in the country who received first-team honors. The team was announced at the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Tournament Kick-Off Banquet on Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

 

Ross led the Hornets this season averaging 20.6 point per game. She led the country in assists at 7.9 per game and steals at 6.6 a game. 

 

Ross has collected several other individual honors highlighting her great season including, four American Midwest Conference (AMC) Player of the Week awards, two NAIA National Player of the Week awards, AMC First Team All-Conference award and AMC Player of the Year award.

 

Harris-Stowe Upsets No. One Seed Oklahoma City in NAIA Tournament, 19 March 2008

The Harris-Stowe Women’s Basketball Team shocked the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament by defeating the No. one seed, Oklahoma City Stars, 73-64 in Oman Arena, Wednesday morning.

 

The tournament win is the first in Harris-Stowe school history, as they will now await the winner of Carroll (Mont.) (25-5) and Westmont (Calif.) (21-8), who they will face in the second round Friday at 10:45 a.m.

 

“Getting the monkey off our backs is important," said Coach Lewis. "I didn’t look at this game as a No. one seed vs. a No. eight seed, but just as another team. We have played great teams all season, so we felt prepared for this challenge.” 
 

Both teams struggled to score early in the first half with the Hornets taking a 6-5 lead on Sheri Jones (St. Louis, MO/ Rend Lake C.C.) layup. The Stars would get comfortable offensively and grab an 11-6 lead with 14:21 remaining in the first half. Oklahoma City built their lead to 30-22 with just more than two minutes remaining in the half when Chanel Ross (Philadelphia, PA/ State Fair C.C.) picked up her fourth personal foul.

 

The Hornets trailed the Stars at halftime 33-27, but would quietly work their way back in the game in the second half and would take a 41-39 lead on a Ross three-point field goal with 12:41 remaining.

 

Harris-Stowe would never relinquish their lead building it to as high as 11 points as they held on to the nine-point victory. Erica Anderson (St. Louis, MO/ Mineral Area C.C.) led the Hornets with her season high 19 points.  Jones added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Ross scored 17 points and dished out five assists.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ross Named to the NAIA Women's Basketball All-American Team, 25 March 2008

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named Harris-Stowe Basketball guard Chanel Ross a First-Team 2008 Division I Women’s Basketball All-American.

 

Ross led the Hornets to a 23-10 overall record and to their second consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament. Scoring 19 points in the first round, Ross helped secure a victory over No. one seed Oklahoma City.

 

Ross was one of 10 female athletes in the country who received first-team honors. Ross led the NAIA in assists and steals, while also averaging 20.6 points per game.
